Bloggers look forward to the month of October, when the Blogtober challenge brings the goal of publishing a new blog post every day. Now, you don’t necessarily have to go all out, but you can use this month to refine your blog and focus on taking some sort of action to refresh your website every day in October.

So whether you are looking for blogging prompts or motivation, here’s everything you need to know about a blogger’s favorite October challenge (plus more information on my spin on the traditional Blogtober Challenge!

What is Blogtober?

Blogtober is an annual blogging challenge where bloggers commit to publishing a new blog post every day for the entire month of October. It can be a general blog post or could even revolve around a particular theme like the fall season, Halloween, or something that correlates with October. It’s a great way to engage with your audience and boost your blog’s stats, but it can be hard to keep up with as a working mom. If you’ve never heard of Blogtober before, you’re in for a treat!

Everything you need to know

Contrary to popular belief, there aren’t many hard-and-fast rules to Blogtober. The primary rule is to publish a new blog post every day during the month of October. However, the type of content can vary depending on your niche. Whether you’re into Halloween-themed posts or autumnal book reviews, the sky’s the limit!

If you know me, though, you know I’m all about sustainability in business. And the concept of writing a blog post every day for 31 days straight is not very sustainable! That’s why I’m hosting a twist on the traditional Blogtober this year in the 2023 Blogtober SEO Challenge.

Why take part in Blogtober?

Participating in Blogtober can supercharge your blog’s visibility in search engines due to the frequent updates and new content. It can attract more readers, increase your social media followers, and also give you plenty of fresh content to share over several platforms. Moreover, Blogtober can improve your writing skills through continuous blogging.

Taking part in Blogtober is not just about publishing content; it’s a great way to get involved in the blogging community. You’ll find that many bloggers take part in this challenge, from lifestyle bloggers to book bloggers. Participating in Blogtober can also be a great way to get started with a new blog or revive an existing one.

Inside my Blogtober SEO Challenge, we are focused on making small, daily tasks to improve the SEO of our website. It may not be the traditional 31 posts in 31 days, but that’s because we’re moms, some working 9-5 and building a business. The traditional Challenge simply isn’t sustainable for us!

Even without the traditional Blogtober rules, we still have an amazing community of women working towards growing their websites inside the Blogtober Challenge!

Benefits of participating in Blogtober

Blogtober is as much a personal challenge as it is a blogging one. It’s a great way to test your limits and see your capabilities. If you’ve never done something like this before, give it a go; you might surprise yourself! Taking part in Blogtober 2023 presents numerous benefits.

First, the exercise demands that you generate fresh and engaging content every single day for a month, testing your creativity, discipline, and resilience.

If you’re in a creative rut or generally feeling uninspired, I’m writing to you that embarking on this challenge is a great way to break free from your usual routine. The daily practice of brainstorming, writing, editing, and publishing can potentially ignite a new sense of passion and creativity within you.

Second, when you commit to Blogtober, you get involved in the community of other participating bloggers, connecting with them on a meaningful level.

This could lead to great networking opportunities and might also increase your blog’s visibility. Sharing and exchanging ideas with other bloggers can be very enriching!

I love the idea of Blogtober because it forces me to generate different content from what I usually rely on. It shouldn’t be viewed as a mere task to check off; rather, I’m taking it as an opportunity to grow as a writer and a blogger. It’s a testament to self-discipline and a celebration of the creative process. Whether you’re a seasoned blogger or a novice, give Blogtober 2023 a shot and experience an unprecedented boost in your blogging journey!

SEO Tips for a Successful Blogtober

While the idea of committing to a daily blog post can be daunting, there are a few tips that will definitely make it easier. Not to mention, ensure all your hard work will actually be worth the effort with boosted Google rankings!

One tip is to have a clear theme that runs throughout your posts. Themed content creates a sense of continuity and engagement for your readers and is also an excellent SEO strategy. Search engines tend to favour websites that regularly update their content. This means that 31 consistent, interlinked themed posts could significantly boost your blog’s search engine ranking.

When researching keywords for your theme blog posts, make sure to select different SEO keywords that are cover a broad range of topics (even within that particular theme!).

What you don’t want to end up doing is something called keyword cannibalization, where you end up competing against yourself for the same keyword!

SEO keywords help your blog become more discoverable and increase organic traffic, ultimately giving your Blogtober challenge more exposure. Wondering what goes into a successful SEO strategy? Grab my Search Engine Success Website Planner for $27 for everything you need to know about creating a website that ranks on Google.

It’s advisable, too, to research and include keywords related to your theme in all your posts.  Remember, it’s not just about quantity but also quality. Don’t just write a bunch of posts to check Blogtober SEO off the box. Provide value to your readers so your efforts can contribute positively to your blog & business.

Planning and organizing your Blogtober posts

Make a rough plan in advance of your 31 posts. Before October, sit down and think about potential topics for each day. Sketch out a tentative calendar using a tool like Notion. This helps you to stay organized and not feel overwhelmed during the month!

If I’m being 100% honest, I’ve never done Blogmas or Blogtober before. The thought of publishing a blog post every day for weeks seemed too overwhelming, especially as a new mom, working 9-5, and building a business.

If combatting the challenge of posting every day is too strenuous, you can opt to participate partly. You can set your own goals, such as posting every alternate day or every week!

Inside my Search Engine Success Lab Membership, we are doing a modified Blogtober Challenge where each week we will focus on a different aspect of growing our blogs. Come join us inside!

Promoting your Blogtober content

Use social media platforms to promote your blogs. Hashtags like #Blogtober and #BlogtoberChallenge can expand your reach!

My favorite social platforms for blogging are Pinterest and of course, SEO. It’s okay if you don’t go overboard resharing your blog content on social media, especially if your focus is driving organic traffic to your post from Google!

Engaging with other Blogtober participants

Supporting and encouraging each other is a major part of Blogtober. Engage with other bloggers participating in the challenge, comment on and share their posts, and you can expect them to do the same! I’m all about connecting and showing support within the blogging community. In fact, I’ve met some of my best friends through blogging & this online space!

Blogtober Monetization

Did you know you can also make money during Blogtober? Use affiliate links throughout your Blogtober posts to earn a small commission. This is especially effective for bloggers reviewing or recommending products.

You can also use Blogtober as a time to promote your digital products and services on the blog.

And if your traffic really explodes this month, use that as a jumping-off point to apply to an ad network like She Media or MediaVine!
