Understanding Search Engine Optimization Basics
The world of SEO can be daunting at first, but don’t worry!
Understanding a few basics can definitely help improve your digital marketing game. By implementing effective Wix SEO plans, you’ll be able to bring more traffic to your website and improve your rank without having to rely on ads or social media (and the best part is that you can totally do this all on your own – no, you don’t HAVE to hire Wix SEO specialists if you don’t want to!).
That means more online visibility while also getting more time with your family!
The first step to understanding your SEO on Wix is to conduct a thorough SEO audit and research keywords relevant to your target audience.
Prioritize updating your title tags, meta descriptions, and header tags. These are elements that determine how your website appears in search engine results.
Prioritize webpage SEO elements such as title tags, meta descriptions, and header tags. Site speed optimization is also crucial to improve overall user experience. Building high-quality backlinks from authoritative sources can significantly improve your website’s credibility. Lastly, don’t underestimate the power of social media to promote your content and improve SEO. Engage with your followers and share your website updates regularly on different platforms. In case you need further guidance, consult with SEO experts or use tools like Wix search engine optimization. Remember, your success is within reach with the right SEO plans and consistent efforts!
1. Research keywords
Keywords are the backbone of SEO. Knowing which keywords your target audience is searching for can help you optimize your website’s content accordingly. Use tools like Google Keyword Planner or Ahrefs to find relevant keywords for your business.
2. Prioritize webpage SEO
On-page SEO includes things like title tags, meta descriptions, header tags, and content optimization. Make sure each page of your website has a unique title tag and meta description that accurately describes the content on the page. Use header tags (H1, H2, H3) to organize your content, and include your target keywords where appropriate. The title and descriptions on your web pages are important.
3. Improve website speed
Website speed can have a big impact on your technical SEO. A slow website can lead to high bounce rates and decreased user engagement, which can negatively affect your search rankings. Use tools like Google PageSpeed Insights or GTmetrix to analyze your website’s speed and make any necessary optimizations.
4. Build high-quality backlinks
Backlinks are links from other websites that point to your website. Link building is an important factor in SEO best practices, as they signal to search engines that other websites consider your content to be valuable and authoritative. Focus on building high-quality backlinks from reputable websites in your industry.
5. Use social media to promote your content
Social media can be a great way to drive traffic to your website and increase your online presence. Share your blog posts, videos, and other content on social media channels like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to increase visibility and engagement. It’s not a requirement, though! Many bloggers find success through SEO alone. It all depends on how much energy you can realistically to maintain your blog and social media channels.
By implementing these tips, you can start optimizing and using professional Wix SEO strategies and begin seeing improvement in your organic traffic. Keep in mind that working to improve your Wix SEO is a long-term process, and it may take several weeks or months to see significant results. Consistency and persistence are key!
Wix SEO Basics
SEO is the language of Google. And if you’re a business owner with a website, you want to be fluent in the language of Google! Google (along with other search engines) crawls through your website’s data and content to find keywords that match search queries (think about it like this: what are the most asked questions in your niche? Build your SEO-friendly strategy from those.). The search engine then ranks all the web pages it finds that match the query, in order, in its search results. The best way to ensure your website is at the top of that list is by having a strong and advanced SEO strategy.
(Need proof? My site is an example! I gained a TON of organic traffic – all from SEO. I revamped my blog strategy and, within six months, saw my organic traffic go from 15 clicks to almost 500!)
The first thing your experienced Wix SEO expert will tell you to do is keyword research. Keywords are basically the answers to search queries. Try coming up with a few questions you think your ideal client is asking Google and choose your keywords from those. The more specific you can be, the better!
For example, if you are a virtual assistant specializing in system implementation, you will want your keywords to revolve around phrases like “virtual assistant who helps with system implementation” or “system implementation made easy”. If you try to rank for shorter terms like “virtual assistant” you will likely never end up on the first page of the search results – there are just too many competing websites out there.
Once you have a good handle on your keywords, make sure you have also optimized the following for Wix SEO in 2023:
Titles and headings
Try using your keywords at least once per blog or webpage.
Metadata
Don’t forget that search engines not only look at the copy on your website but also gather information from metadata. If you have images on your site, include metadata that includes your keywords. (Interested in learning more? Check out my blog post, Blogging SEO 101: What is Metadata and How to Use It?)
URLs
All your URLs should contain your keywords.
Mobile viewing
In this day and age, if your website doesn’t load properly on a mobile device, no one is going to look twice at it. Luckily for you, Wix has an Editor that can update all your content and make it mobile-friendly.
Clear navigation
It doesn’t seem like having intuitive navigation, responsive design, or a quick loading speed would impact your SEO, but they all do! Search engines consider these factors when deciding where to rank your website, so don’t put these on the back burner just because they don’t involve keywords. Get your entire website’s SEO ready to go all at once so you can give yourself the best chance at positioning your website as high as you can!
If you want to get to the top of the search engine results pages, you need to have fresh content. No, this doesn’t mean you need to rewrite your sales page every month in order to rank for best Wix SEO in 2023! The easiest way to do this is through a blog. According to Prism Global, a blog will allow you to publish engaging quality content each week – and it will also allow you to play around with different sets of keywords. It can be tough to fit in a lot of keywords if your website doesn’t have a lot of copy. Having a blog on your professional SEO Wix website lets you explore topics related to your niche and shows all website visitors (and search engines!) that you are an expert in your field.
Any top Wix SEO wiz will tell you that the Wix SEO optimization tools will help you increase your site’s visibility. In fact, Wix partnered with Google in 2018 to connect all Wix sites with the Google Search Console. This means you can monitor and troubleshoot your position on Google – in real time and by using local SEO.
All Wix websites come with Wix Analytics. I love this function because it provides so much data for each page of your website. It’s so easy to see what content is doing well, and what content is in need of a boost. It’s all very user-friendly and gives you implementation suggestions for improving your site – all based on data!
Wix SEO in 2023 is truly the answer to getting your website ranked on the first page of Google. If you want more details about the pros and cons of the SEO features Wix offers, we’ll help you get there! Keep reading!
Pros and Cons of Wix SEO
Wix has an extensive guide to learning and implementing SEO on your website. It goes over everything you might need to know to get Wix SEO in 2023, including caching, indexing, technical audits, data, and third-party integration. Not sure what all of that means? Don’t stress – I’ve broken down the Wix SEO handbook into a simple pros and cons list for you. We’ll make it easy for you to understand, I promise.
Wix SEO Pros
Ease of Information
If you want information, this website has it. Truly, if there’s something you want to learn how to do regarding SEO and using Wix (but don’t want to mess with any SEO experts for hire) this handbook can teach you how to do it. It’s extremely detailed and offers screenshots, step-by-step instructions, and links to articles with more information.
Accessibility
The Wix Accessibility Wizard “quickly scans your site to pinpoint accessibility issues and gives you a step-by-step plan to make your website accessible to all.” It’s important that everyone is able to interact with your website. Wix makes it easy to implement accessibility throughout your entire site. You don’t need an SEO agency or SEO optimization expert to make your website accessible!
New SEO Features
The SEO section of the Wix Editor allows you to add a variety of metadata to each page, making it easier to insert locations or different keywords on different pages. The top-rated SEO Tools Panel (in the Wix Editor) also makes it easy to customize the URL or add tags to posts or pages (yes, even e-commerce pages).
Wix SEO Cons
Information Overload
You know how I said above that the plan was really extensive and incredibly detailed? Well, for some people, that could be a little too much information. It’s overwhelming to click that link, scroll through all the text, and figure out where to start. It would be nice if the SEO tools had a simple “How to Get Started” or a basic sitemap version.
Wix Analytics Differs from Google Analytics Data
Wix Analytics differs from the data you get with Google’s tools. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it is something to be aware of when looking through your data. Google and Wix pull different things when creating your reports, so you may have to look at both each month in order to get the full picture of how your Wix SEO in 2023 is performing.
Better SEO Options Available
Wix SEO options still aren’t up to par with WordPress, for example. Many SEOs prefer to work with WordPress and other platforms over Wix for that reason (myself included, although I am offering 25% off my website optimization package for Wix websites so I can try out the platform for myself).
Wix SEO is a robust program designed to help you get the most organic traffic you can. If you haven’t taken advantage of it, it’s time to start!
Wix SEO Features Checklist
The Wix SEO Checklist does more than report how well your keywords perform with search engines. It has over 25 different features that make it possible for you to truly delve into the world of SEO – and reap the benefits.
Wix SEO Settings and Tools
Some of my favorite features in Wix SEO 2023 are:
- Custom meta tags: Wix automatically generates these for all your pages, but they are all editable and customizable if you ever want to change them.
- Social sharing optimization: Tailor how your pages look when shared on social sites.
- URL customization: You can use the URLs Wix creates or create your own. Wix will always automatically update your site map and tags!
- Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP): Wix prioritizes faster loading times for your blog posts on mobile devices.
- Google Business Profile integration: You can manage your Google Business Profile, assess reviews, and connect with customers from your Wix dashboard.
- Semrush integration: This helps you find strong keywords and creates a report to use when implementing them.
- SEO Setup Checklist: When you first create your Wix site, this checklist will take you through all the basic steps of setting up your website for SEO.

Tracking and Analyzing Wix SEO Performance
The Wix Dashboard has an Analytics section, and I cannot stress how USEFUL it is for website owners!
Wix Analytics “reviews your traffic, visitor behavior, and revenue reports” and then sends you personalized recommendations for improvement. I personally love that it shows where website visitors are coming from and where they are spending the most time. If you know how they’re finding you and where they’re spending their time, you can optimize those places for sales and increase your conversion rates!
Once you know what content is the most engaging to your website visitors, you can create more content like that in hopes of capturing more organic traffic or by making that content the focal point of your next marketing campaign.
The best part about this Wix function? It works just as well on a mobile device as it does on a laptop! This means that busy business owners (like you and me) can check the data it is pulling and analyze it whenever we have some free time. It really allows you to make data-driven decisions for your website so easily!
